Statement from Premier Heather Stefanson, Indigenous Reconciliation and Northern Relations Minister Alan Lagimodiere, and Families Minister Rochelle Squires Minister Responsible for the Status of Women, On Third Anniversary of the Final Report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls
In recent weeks, three Indigenous women’s lives were tragically taken, and we mourn with their family, friends and community.
As we mark the third anniversary of the Final Report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, we honour and remember the lives of these women, and all Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people who have lost their lives to violence.
Our government remains committed to working closely with Indigenous leadership, community-based organizations, police and law enforcement partners to continue to take concrete steps to respond to the Calls for Justice of the national inquiry and to combat gender-based violence in Manitoba, particularly as it disproportionately impacts Indigenous communities. Important initiatives are underway to address this national tragedy including the ongoing work of Manitoba’s Gender-Based Violence Committee of Cabinet, the recent introduction of Clare’s law, which would enable women in Manitoba to access information about their partner’s history of violence and the establishment of the Sexual Violence Awareness and Prevention Act.
June 3 serves as a significant reminder of the continuous work that needs to be done to ensure that Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people are safe and protected.
