Manitoba Delegation Will Promote Province's Untapped Mining and Mineral Potential: Premier

TORONTO—As part of the Manitoba government’s efforts to build the economy, the province is sending its largest-ever delegation to this week’s Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) conference in Toronto, Premier Heather Stefanson announced here today.

“Our government is firmly committed to regaining Manitoba’s status as a global leader in the sector and attracting new exploration and mining to our province,” Stefanson said. “As part of our Budget 2022 commitment to build our economy and focus on economic recovery and growth, we want to continue building on the exciting possibilities for mining development in Manitoba’s vast and untapped mineral resources.”

Stefanson said this year, Manitoba is experiencing the highest level of exploration expenditures in the history of the province. Natural Resources Canada has reported exploration expenditure intentions for 2022 at $154 million. The PDAC conference, which runs from June 13 to 15, provides Manitoba the opportunity to identify new development and investment potential for the province’s diverse mineral resources, the premier noted.

The Manitoba delegation includes the premier, Deputy Premier and Economic Development, Investment and Trade Minister Cliff Cullen, newly appointed Natural Resources and Northern Development Minister Greg Nesbitt and departmental staff.

“We are taking a whole-of-government approach to show our commitment to the mining sector and positioning Manitoba on the world stage as a preferred mining destination,” said Nesbitt. “Mining is a significant, long-time contributor to Manitoba’s economic prosperity and we recognize there is tremendous potential for additional investment and job creation in the sector.”

Reconciliation and partnerships with Indigenous communities and other levels of government are also key to strengthening Manitoba’s mining economy, the premier and minister noted.

The premier added the province’s abundance of critical minerals along with its strong renewable energy production puts Manitoba in an ideal position to seize opportunities in the green energy sector. The Manitoba delegation will be hosting multiple events and meetings with Indigenous leaders, stakeholders and industry to promote Manitoba’s many opportunities for the mining industry.
