Manitoba Government Announces Appointments to the Manitoba Hydro-Electric Board, Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries Corporation Board and Manitoba Public Insurance Board of Directors



The Manitoba government has made a number of new appointments to the Manitoba Hydro-Electric Board, Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries Corporation board of directors and Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) board of directors, Finance Minister Cameron Friesen and Sport, Culture and Heritage Minister Andrew Smith, minister responsible for the Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries Corporation, announced today.

“I look forward to working with this exceptional group of community leaders,” said Friesen. “I would like to thank the former members of the board for their committed and loyal service to Manitobans.”

The provincial government has appointed a new chair, Edward Kennedy, a new vice-chair, Beth Bell, and two new board members, David Brown and Gordon Pollard, to the Manitoba Hydro-Electric Board.

The Manitoba Hydro-Electric Board is responsible for carrying out the duties, powers and functions of the Manitoba Hydro corporation. These responsibilities include ensuring a safe, reliable and economical supply of energy for Manitoba, all while ensuring Manitoba Hydro remains stable and provides low rates for Manitobans.

The provincial government has also appointed Bonnie Mitchelson as the new chairperson for Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries Corporation board of directors and Tim Comack as the vice-chair, Christine Van Cauwenberghe, Gestur Kristjansson, Bryce Matlashewski and Brenda Tobac are reappointed to the board.

The Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries Corporation board is responsible for governance and stewardship of the corporation. This includes formulation and ongoing review of vision, values, mission and goals, collaborative strategic planning and budget setting, comprehensive oversight and monitoring, interpretation of broad public policy goals identified by the government and progressive performance management.

“As the new minister responsible for the Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries Corporation, I am excited to start working with the board,” said Smith. “To the appointees, who are all accomplished in their own fields, thank you for accepting this responsibility.”

The province is also announcing appointments to the MPI board of directors. Michael Sullivan has been reappointed as chair, Diane Roussin is appointed as a new member and James (Jim) Robson, Grant Stefanson and Carolyn Halbert have been reappointed as members.

MPI administers the Drivers and Vehicles Act on behalf of the Manitoba government and provides driver licensing and vehicle registration functions under the act. Its primary purpose is to administer the basic compulsory, universally available auto insurance program. MPI also offers competitive optional expanded benefits auto insurance for all Manitobans and competitive auto insurance for fleets based in Manitoba.
