Statement from Premier Heather Stefanson on Canadian Federation of Independent Business Report Card on Internal Trade
Manitoba is pleased to share the top grade in Canada on reducing internal trade barriers in a report card issued by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB).
Internal trade and labour mobility restrictions are estimated to cost Canadian families the equivalent of $1,500 per year through a reduction in the national GDP of about four per cent. Now more than ever, as our economy continues to recover and Canadian families are suffering from rising prices and affordability challenges, all governments have to redouble their efforts to reduce these barriers.
The CFIB ranking reflects our government’s ongoing commitment and work since taking office in 2016. CFIB recognizes Manitoba’s leadership in having the least labour mobility restrictions in the country and among the fewest remaining internal trade exemptions, for signing the most regulatory reconciliation agreements and for being the only jurisdiction to permit full direct to consumer alcohol sales across the country with no import restrictions on personal use.
We are proud of our accomplishments in a relatively short period, as we continue to assist Manitoba families and businesses through more free trade on goods and services while making Manitoba a more attractive home for careers and jobs through greater labour mobility.
There is much more work to do in these areas across the country, to strengthen our national economy and assist people facing ongoing affordability challenges. I am committed to pushing all first ministers to further advance this important work and our government will continue to lead by example, nationally, for the benefit of all Manitobans.
