Manitoba Government Announces Collaborative Table on Policy And Legislation Affecting Indigenous Peoples
– – –Indigenous Organizations Invited to Participate in Informing Changes to Legislation Including Child and Family Services Act Amendments: Squires
The Manitoba government is creating a collaborative table to address policy and legislative issues affecting Indigenous Peoples that will include representation from Indigenous governments and organizations, Families Minister Rochelle Squires announced today.
“Our government is committed to working collaboratively with First Nations, Inuit and Métis leadership and communities to address past wrongs and support Indigenous-led solutions in the spirit of reconciliation,” said Squires. “We know that decisions related to matters involving Indigenous children should be led by Indigenous Peoples and we look forward to this opportunity for engagement with those who know best.”
Last week, Indigenous organizations, including the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs, Southern Chiefs’ Organization, Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak, the Sioux Valley Dakota Nation and the Manitoba Métis Federation, received letters inviting them to appoint two representatives to a technician’s table hosted by the Department of Families.
“Solidarity and strategic advocacy by First Nations is a powerful thing,” said Regional Chief Cindy Woodhouse, Assembly of First Nations. “After many years of struggle, the Manitoba government has finally decided to do the right thing. I commend the Manitoba government for its decision not to appeal this decision.”
In May of this year, the Court of Queen’s Bench announced its ruling on the children’s special allowance. Squires noted the Manitoba government respects the decision and will not appeal it.
