Statement from Premier Heather Stefanson on the Appointment of Anita Neville as Next Lieutenant-Governor of Manitoba

Today, the Government of Canada informed the province the Honourable Anita Neville will serve as the next lieutenant-governor of Manitoba. On behalf of all my colleagues at the Manitoba legislature and all Manitobans, I would like to welcome the Hon. Neville to this esteemed role.

The Hon. Neville, who will be sworn in as Manitoba’s 26th lieutenant-governor, has a long and proud history of public service, representing Manitobans and the constituency of Winnipeg South Centre in the House of Commons from 2000 to 2011. The Hon. Neville sat on various committees and served as the parliamentary secretary to the minister of Canadian heritage and the minister responsible for status of women during her time in office. Prior to entering public life, the Hon. Neville worked as an economic development consultant and served for many years as a Winnipeg school trustee. The Hon. Neville is active in her community and I am confident she will serve as a formidable lieutenant-governor.

As we welcome the Hon. Neville to this role, I want to offer my heartfelt gratitude to Her Honour, the Honourable Janice Filmon and her husband, former premier His Honour Gary Filmon, for their years of dedication and exemplary service to the people of Manitoba.

For over seven years, Her Honour served Manitobans as the Queen’s representative with compassion, grace and passion for advancing reconciliation. Her Honour believes in the power of giving back to the community and took great pride in celebrating the achievements and service of inspiring Manitobans. On behalf of all Manitobans, I thank her for her service, kindness and unique ability to bring people together to learn and inspire the next generation.
