Statement from Municipal Relations Minister Eileen Clarke on Upcoming Municipal Elections

As fall approaches, I encourage Manitobans who would like to make a difference in their communities to consider running for council in the next general municipal election on Oct. 26.

There are many reasons to participate.

As part of your municipal government, you can help to address important issues that affect you and your neighbours, and play a role in driving your community priorities forward. You will also be helping to build decision-making capacity at the local level to ensure your community reflects the uniqueness and diversity of its citizens.

It is also an opportunity to expand your personal and professional horizons by taking on a new challenge. My eight years as the mayor of the Town of Gladstone helped me grow as a leader and as an elected official. I gained valuable experience in understanding the challenges and opportunities of being a municipal elected official and serving the public.

All elected officials are held to a higher standard and are required to follow a code of conduct. Respect, integrity, commitment to community and appreciation for diverse perspectives are fundamental attributes for anyone seeking to serve on a municipal council.

On behalf of the Manitoba government and all of my colleagues in the Manitoba legislative assembly, I encourage healthy, productive debate and dialogue as we move into municipal election season.

If you are interested in pursuing a role in municipal leadership, you can register now and submit your nomination papers in mid-September. Manitoba Municipal Relations has prepared resources to support municipalities, election officials and candidates throughout the election process including the 2022 Election Official’s Manual, the Chief Administrative Officer’s Campaign Finance Manual and the Candidates Guidebook. These resources, frequently asked questions and more information are available online at www.gov.mb.ca/mr/mfas/elections.html.
