Manitoba Government Extends Application Deadline for King's Counsel Appointments

– – –
Queen's Counsel Designations Recognizing Contributions of Outstanding Manitoba Lawyers Have Now Transitioned to King's Counsel

The Manitoba government is extending the call for applications for King’s Counsel (KC), a prestigious designation for lawyers awarded in recognition of their exceptional contributions to the practise of law until Oct. 14, Justice Minister Kelvin Goertzen announced today.

“The King’s Counsel designation officially recognizes professional excellence by Manitoba lawyers, whose chosen field plays such an important role in our society,” said Goertzen. “We invite applications from qualified lawyers across the province whose professional records of achievement deserve consideration for the KC designation, and also encourage others to nominate lawyers who exemplify the best qualities of their profession to receive this unique honour.”

King’s Counsel is an honorary title bestowed on a lawyer by the lieutenant-governor in council, based on recommendations made by the justice minister, following consultation with an advisory council. Practising and retired lawyers are eligible to self-nominate, or they may be nominated by others. To be eligible for KC consideration, lawyers must have demonstrated outstanding practice, shown integrity and leadership, contributed to excellence in the profession and been in practice for at least 10 years.

The minister notes that all current Queen's Counsel appointments have automatically become King's Counsel and may use the designation KC.

Applications for King’s Counsel appointments are valid for three years. Previous applicants need not reapply, unless they choose to provide new or updated information. In accordance with tradition, the new appointments will be named Jan. 1, 2023 by the lieutenant-governor and justice minister.

The deadline for nominations has been extended to Friday, Oct. 14.
