Museums Play Key Role in Preservation, Promotion of Manitoba Heritage: Smith

The Manitoba government is issuing a call for applications for the Community Museum Project Support program, an eight-year initiative established to help fund museum activities that advance reconciliation, equity, diversity, inclusion, COVID-19 recovery, and collections management, Sport, Culture and Heritage Minister Andrew Smith announced today.

“Our museums are valued community gathering places that play key roles in the preservation, promotion and public education of Manitoba’s diverse heritage, culture and identity,” said Smith. “As our province’s museums continue to rebound from the operational impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, our government is pleased to offer this program to help support the economic recovery of these important facilities where visitors learn, celebrate and grow through a deeper understanding of our province’s defining stories. This program supports our government’s commitment to advance reconciliation and build a more inclusive, prosperous future for all Manitobans.”

Eligible applicants include non-profit community museums operating to conserve, study, interpret and exhibit objects of educational and cultural value for the benefit and enjoyment of the public. Some of the program’s objectives are to support a balanced interpretation of Manitoba’s heritage, to improve the quality of museum collections and programs, and to facilitate partnerships and co-operation.

The Community Museum Project Support program allocates $240,000 annually to support up to 100 per cent of project costs, to a maximum of $25,000 per applicant. The deadline for applications is Feb. 5, 2023.
