Manitoba Government Encourages Public to Attend Community Open House on Expansion at École Sir William Osler

The Manitoba government and the Winnipeg School Division are encouraging the public to attend an upcoming community open house at École Sir William Osler on Jan. 25 to learn about plans for an addition and renovations at the school, and the construction of a new 74-space child-care facility, Education and Early Childhood Learning Minister Wayne Ewasko and Labour, Consumer Protection and Government Services Minister Reg Helwer announced today.

“Our government is committed to ensuring all Manitoba students have equitable access to high-quality educational experiences, including opportunities to expand their science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics skills,” said Ewasko. “Student enrollment in the French immersion program continues to increase, and we are working proactively to expand and enhance school settings that are appropriate for learning French. We invite the public to attend the community open house at École Sir William Osler to learn more about these plans.”

The Jan. 25 open house will take place in the school’s gymnatorium beginning at 5:30 p.m., with a presentation at 6 p.m. that will include design details, proposed layouts and tentative construction information.

“Our government is proud to continue supporting capital projects that benefit Manitobans and advance the prosperity of our great province,” said Helwer. “As École Sir William Osler transitions to become a kindergarten to Grade 8 school, the expansion project will meet the community’s anticipated enrolment needs.”

The ministers noted the project will include a 35,000-sq.-ft. expansion for seven new classrooms, a new gym, music room, art room, science classroom and special education life skills suite. The existing gymnatorium will be renovated into a multi-purpose room.

“We’re very pleased to see the expansion, with a new gymnasium and additional classrooms, that will continue to support the learning needs of all students attending the nursery to Grade 8 French Milieu program at École Sir William Osler. Since the reopening of the school in 2015, our families have been eagerly awaiting additions and renovations to the school for the expansion of the program,” said Betty Edel, board chair, Winnipeg School Division. “Our families are equally pleased with the announcement of the new child-care facility and are delighted to see their school community grow and thrive.”

As part of the government’s ongoing commitment to expand access to inclusive, affordable child care for Manitoba families, the project also includes the construction of a new 74-space child-care facility, added Ewasko.

“Child-care facilities co-located with community schools provide parents with accessible, conveniently-located early learning programming that meets their family’s needs,” said Ewasko. “Our government is proud to continue supporting child-care centre development projects that ensure Manitoba children have access to high-quality, safe care that supports their healthy physical, emotional and social development.”
