Manitoba Government Selects Diverse Membership for Education Council

Members will Share Knowledge, Experience and Perspectives to Enhance Student Achievement, Well-being: Ewasko

The Manitoba government has selected a diverse group of education partners, members of the public, and other Manitobans as members of the Manitoba Education Council, Education and Early Childhood Learning Minister Wayne Ewasko announced today.

“Our government would like to welcome the first members of the new Manitoba Education Council and extend thanks to all those who applied and to those organizations who recommended council members,” said Ewasko. “Council members will use their diverse backgrounds and experience to share their knowledge and perspectives on how we can enhance student achievement and well-being with a focus on initiatives in the K to 12 Education Action Plan, while also discussing and planning for broader issues affecting the education system.”

The education council’s membership represents Manitoba’s diverse education sector and includes education associations, two students from the Student Advisory Council, and seven parents. The council is chaired by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Learning’s deputy minister and includes representatives from Indigenous governing bodies, as well as post-secondary, early learning and child care, mental health and social services sectors. The first council meeting was held today.

A provincial implementation team is also being established to support this work made up of representatives from Manitoba’s 37 school divisions and co-chaired by a superintendent and a representative from the Department of Education and Early Childhood Learning.

“In April 2022, the Manitoba government released the K to 12 Education Action Plan in response to recommendations of the Manitoba Commission on Kindergarten to Grade 12 Education,” said Ewasko. “The commission was clear that the recommendations in its report could only be accomplished if all education partners work together. There were calls for a strong intersectoral approach as well as a forum to facilitate provincial planning and implementation. This council and implementation team will foster that collaboration and co-ordination.”
