Manitoba Government Invests in Education Facilities in Morden

New Kindergarten to Grade 8 School to Meet Current, Future Enrolment Needs, Addition to Morden Collegiate Institute Technology Education Centre to Provide High-Quality Trades Education: Ewasko

A new dual-track French and English kindergarten to Grade 8 school in Morden will ensure the area has the capacity to address growing student enrolment in the region while an investment in the Morden Collegiate Institute (MCI) Technology Education Centre will provide trades education in the area, Education and Early Childhood Learning Minister Wayne Ewasko announced today.

“Having diverse educational opportunities right in your area contributes to the overall health and well-being of a community. The construction of a new kindergarten to Grade 8 school and the recently completed addition to the MCI Technology Education Centre help meet current enrolment needs and anticipated growth in the city of Morden,” said Ewasko. “It is important Manitoba students have access to as many opportunities as possible including French-language instruction – an integral part of the province’s education system, and skilled trades – a vital component of both education and community well-being.”

The new, 81,600-sq.-ft. kindergarten to Grade 8 school will have an initial capacity of 600 students, with the ability to accommodate up to 800 students in the future. At opening, the school will have 20 regular classrooms including art classrooms, two kindergarten classrooms, a science, technology and math classroom, as well as home economics and industrial arts classrooms. The school will also have a gym, library, multi-purpose space and common area.

A 74-space child-care facility will also be integrated into the school on the main floor and will have its own drop-off and pick-up entrance, the minister noted.

Construction on the new school is expected to begin this spring, the minister said, adding the school is part of the Manitoba government’s guarantee to build 20 new schools in 10 years.

The new addition to the MCI Technology Education Centre has also been completed with approximately 5,400 sq. ft. of added space. This addition relocates the school’s piping trades program from its former leased space into a permanent facility adjacent to the existing welding trades shop, which has also been renovated to allow for better flow of students in the building.

Construction on the addition began in January 2022 with a total project cost of $3.2 million. The addition opened for classes early last month, the minister noted.

“Western School Division is very excited to have these outstanding facilities to support the learning of our students. The MCI Technology Education Centre is a state-of-the-art facility that supports our students in acquiring job-ready skills for careers in the trades,” said Stephen Ross, superintendent of schools/CEO, Western School Division. “The construction of the new school is very exciting for our division and our community. This wonderful facility will support our students as they acquire and develop the foundational skills required to thrive in the future.”
