Families in Winnipeg’s Sage Creek neighbourhood will soon benefit from 60 new child-care spaces as part of the Manitoba government’s efforts to build stronger communities, Education and Early Childhood Learning Minister Wayne Ewasko announced today.

“Our government is committed to increasing access to affordable, high quality and inclusive child care to meet the needs of families with parents who require before- and after-school child care,” said Ewasko. “We will continue to build on our recent historic announcement of $10-a-day child care for regular hours of funded and licensed child care by supporting initiatives that build capacity in the system to ensure Manitoba families have access to quality child care in their communities.”

The Manitoba government is providing more than $375,000 from the provincial Early Learning and Child Care Building Fund for Living Prairie Childcare’s expansion project to help meet demand for child care in Sage Creek.

Construction was recently completed on the newly expanded licensed facility, which opened last month. With the additional space, Living Prairie Childcare is now able to offer 20 new preschool and 40 new school-age spaces at its site, in addition to the 74 spaces the centre already provides.

The minister noted 20 of the child-care spaces that were developed with this investment are part of the Manitoba government’s commitment to create 23,000 new, regulated not-for-profit child-care spaces for children under age seven across the province by 2026.

The investment builds on other recent Manitoba government investments in child-care projects and the creation of new spaces including:

  • a 48-space expansion at the Young Men’s Christian Association of Brandon’s Y Downtown Early Learning Centre;
  • a $1-million investment to add additional spaces for newcomers in Winnipeg; and
  • a 40-space project to establish the first child-care centre in the community of Oakville in the Rural Municipality of Portage la Prairie.
