Manitoba businesses, travellers and tourism operators will soon be one flight away from hundreds of new destinations thanks to a new direct flight from Winnipeg to Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta, Premier Heather Stefanson announced today.

“I am thrilled to welcome this new direct flight by WestJet connecting two major North American cities, which is poised to boost economic growth and create jobs on both sides of the border,” said Stefanson. “Establishing a Winnipeg to Atlanta route is a tremendous opportunity not only for Manitoba businesses to expand their reach and explore new international markets, but for travellers to expand their horizons and explore new cultures and experiences.”

Atlanta is home to seven Fortune 100 companies and is a major hub for Delta Airlines. The new flight will give Manitoba industries faster access to the places where they do business in the United States, and connect Manitoba travellers to more than 200 destinations in Mexico, the Caribbean, South America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.

“Strong partnerships are integral to our commitment to landing more connections to more places that matter for the community,” said Nick Hays, president and CEO, Winnipeg Airports Authority. “We are grateful for the continued support and collaboration of the Manitoba government as new routes result in greater opportunities and a stronger economy, making this province an even better place to call home.”

Through the Economic Development Board Secretariat, the Manitoba government is providing $5 million to support Winnipeg Airports Authority and airlines launching new routes to connect Winnipeg to international markets. The premier noted the funding arrangement is similar to Manitoba government support provided last year for a direct route between Winnipeg and Los Angeles, connecting Manitoba’s film industry with Hollywood.

“The Manitoba government continues to be an important partner in WestJet's strategic growth plan and working together has allowed us to unlock routes that bring economic prosperity to the region while connecting Manitobans to the U.S. and beyond,” said John Weatherill, executive vice-president and chief commercial officer, WestJet. “We remain grateful to Premier Stefanson and our partners across the province who continue to support our ambitions to bolster the economies and connectivity of the communities we serve.”

The first flight to Atlanta departs Winnipeg at 9 a.m. on Sept. 6.
