Manito Ahbee Unifies, Educates and Inspires in Celebration, Honouring of Indigenous Traditions: Khan, Clarke

The Manitoba government is providing $370,000 to support the upcoming Manito Ahbee Festival, Sport, Culture and Heritage Minister Obby Khan and Indigenous Reconciliation and Northern Relations Minister Eileen Clarke announced today.

“The Manito Ahbee Festival is an important opportunity for all Manitobans to come together to renew and unite,” said Khan. “Our government is pleased to support this celebration of Indigenous culture and sport, which unifies, educates and inspires thousands of people from across Canada every year.”

The Manito Ahbee Festival hosts the largest international competition powwow in Canada and the second largest in North America.

“The festival is a great opportunity for Manitobans to gather and appreciate Indigenous arts and music,” said Clarke. “Manito Ahbee offers cultural experiences and education uniting all visitors in a wonderful way to celebrate and honour Indigenous traditions.”

This year’s event also includes a performance stage, artists and Elders programs, an Indigenous marketplace, various sports tournaments, a teepee-raising competition, a 48-hour film contest and the exciting Indian Horse relay. New programming includes the Red Road Runway Indigenous fashion show, the Inuit and Dene showcase, a ribbon skirt contest, a Jig n’ Jam and the NextGen Youth Empowerment Celebration.

“The support from the Manitoba government is an important contribution to the Manito Ahbee Festival's dynamic culture, arts and music,” said Lisa Meeches, executive director, Manito Ahbee Festival. “This important contribution will help towards the revitalization of the resilient cultures and customs of Indigenous Peoples of Manitoba, and is a vital step towards reconciliation in our province.”

The minister noted the two-day powwow continues to be the festival’s flagship event, attracting hundreds of dancers from across Canada and the United States. This year’s international powwow will feature 32 dance categories and special awards.

The Manito Ahbee Festival takes place at Red River Exhibition Park from May 18 to May 23. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.manitoahbee.com/.
