Statement from Economic Development, Investment and Trade Minister Jeff Wharton on Provincial Minerals Week

Manitoba minerals, metals, and petroleum are critical to our daily lives, contributing to our high standard of living and powering the innovations that shape our future.

Given the mineral sector’s tremendous importance, the Manitoba government is proud to have proclaimed May 22 to 26 as Provincial Minerals Week in Manitoba.

The mineral industry is Manitoba’s second-largest primary resource industry, employing thousands of workers in direct and indirect jobs and generating many more in spin-off business. Last year, the mining industry invested a record $170 million in exploration, driving economic growth provincewide.

We acknowledge the rich history of our resource communities and honour the strength of the people who have built and sustained this industry across generations. Their dedication and resilience form the foundation of our mineral sector.

We commend the industry’s progress in environmental management, emergency response preparedness, and occupational health and safety. By fostering partnerships among government, industry, labour, Indigenous Peoples and communities, Manitoba is positioned to lead as Canada's most effective, technologically advanced and socially responsible mineral developer.

Moreover, we are working diligently to increase Indigenous participation in resource development while attracting additional mining investments to Manitoba. We recognize the importance of economic reconciliation and its role in fostering inclusive growth and opportunities for all.

Provincial Minerals Week allows us to celebrate the essential contribution that our mineral resources and related industries make to Manitoba’s economy and the people of our province.

Let us honour our past achievements, embrace the opportunities ahead, and work together to ensure a sustainable and prosperous future for all Manitobans.
