Standing Hearing for Inquest into Deaths of Michael Monney, Adrian Fillion and Nolan Thomas

A standing hearing will take place to determine who can participate in the upcoming inquest into the deaths of:

  • Michael Monney of Stony Mountain (date of birth March 1, 1992);
  • Adrian Fillion of Stony Mountain (date of birth June 28, 1996); and
  • Nolan Thomas of Stony Mountain (date of birth March 19, 1992).

The circumstances of death were as follows:

  • On April 13, 2019, Monney, an inmate at Stony Mountain Institution, was stabbed during an altercation with other inmates. Resuscitation at the scene and at the nearby hospital was unsuccessful.
  • On April 22, 2019, Fillion, an inmate at Stony Mountain Institution, was in his cell when two inmates entered his cell and exited approximately one minute later. He pressed the cell call button to alert the guards and corrections officers located him in his cell, unresponsive with multiple stab wounds. He was transported to Stonewall District Health Centre and subsequently pronounced deceased despite resuscitation efforts.
  • On November 2, 2018, Thomas, an inmate at Stony Mountain Institution, was found unresponsive in a cell with evidence of multiple traumatic injuries. Resuscitation was unsuccessful. He was subsequently pronounced deceased.

Under the Fatality Inquiries Act, an inquest has been called by the chief medical examiner. Inquests explore the circumstances and events leading to deaths for the purpose of finding out what, if anything, might be done to prevent similar deaths in the future.

Before the inquest begins, the judge will decide who can participate in the process and question witnesses. Individuals and groups may make an application to be granted standing and participate in the inquest. Those interested in applying for standing should contact Katherine Bueti, inquest counsel, at 204-560-5001 or kathy@ssalaw.ca by Nov. 21.

The standing hearing will be held at 2 p.m. on Dec. 1 in courtroom 403 at the Manitoba Law Courts Complex, 408 York Ave., Winnipeg.
