Statement from Indigenous Economic Development Minister Ian Bushie on Meeting of Indigenous Leaders and Federal, Provincial and Territorial Indigenous Affairs Ministers

I am pleased to have participated on behalf of the Manitoba government at the meeting of Indigenous leaders and federal, provincial, and territorial Indigenous affairs ministers held in Ottawa on Nov. 15 and 16. This is the second meeting of this table, established earlier this year, to create a space for collaboration on issues affecting Indigenous Peoples at a national level.

The focus of the meeting’s agenda was advancing economic reconciliation, which is a key priority for our government. During the forum, the Manitoba government heard from a host of Indigenous leaders and entrepreneurs who are blazing trails in our economy across Turtle Island. As Indigenous economic development minister, I am honoured to have had the opportunity to learn from these Indigenous leaders and entrepreneurs and I look forward to exploring how their ideas may be used in collaboration with local Indigenous communities and entrepreneurs to advance economic development at home in Manitoba.

Strong, respectful relationships with local Indigenous governments, organizations and communities are integral to advancing economic reconciliation in Manitoba. Our government is committed to advancing partnerships to support new and existing Indigenous economic developments, and to pursuing future opportunities with Indigenous communities in Manitoba, particularly focusing on education and jobs.

Working together, we can ensure that all Manitobans continually benefit from the contributions of Indigenous Manitobans and others towards economic reconciliation and related development.
