Standing Hearing set for Inquest into Death of Ji Kwang Kim

A hearing date has been set to determine who can participate in the upcoming inquest into the death of Ji Kwang Kim of Winnipeg, born July 11, 1992.

The circumstances of Kim’s death were as follows:

Kim was an involuntary psychiatric patient at Health Sciences Centre Winnipeg where he was being treated for mental health issues. On April 5, 2022, Kim went absent without leave from the psychiatric unit during a smoke break and did not return. His mother reported briefly seeing him at 5 p.m. that day and he was not seen again. Kim was found near the FortWhyte park on April 8, 2022, and was subsequently pronounced deceased. The manner of death was determined to be suicide.

Under the Fatality Inquiries Act, the chief medical examiner has called an inquest. Inquests explore the circumstances and events leading to deaths to determine what, if anything, could be done to help prevent similar deaths from occurring in the future.

Before the inquest can begin, the judge will decide who can participate and question witnesses. Individuals and groups may make application to be granted standing and participation. Those interested in applying for standing should contact Lisa LaBossiere, inquest counsel, at 204-926-1527 or at llabossiere@myersfirm.com by Jan. 15, 2024.

A standing hearing will be held on Feb. 2, 2024, at 10 a.m. in courtroom 408 at the Manitoba Law Courts Complex, 408 York Ave., Winnipeg.
