Precipitation System Forecasted to Bring Heavy Snow and Mix of Rain and Sleet This Weekend
Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure’s Hydrologic Forecast Centre is monitoring a potential precipitation system that would bring between 15 and 35 millimetres of precipitation for most parts of Manitoba.
The system is predicted to begin Saturday evening and end Monday morning. Based on Environment and Climate Change Canada’s latest forecast, the precipitation system is expected to be a mix of rain, sleet and snow. Some areas of Manitoba could receive up to 35 centimetres of snow in a very short period of time. The system is anticipated to come with heavy winds gusting up to 60 kilometres per hour, which could create blowing snow conditions and significantly reduce visibility on Manitoba roads and highways.
Motorists are reminded to be vigilant and adjust their driving for road conditions. Drivers should also ensure they are watching for snow-clearing equipment during inclement weather. All snow-clearing equipment operates using flashing blue lights. Motorists should slow down and stay well back of snow-clearing equipment.
The Manitoba Hydrologic Forecast Centre will analyze the data from the precipitation system once it clears the province and factor this information into the March Flood Outlook Report, which will be released in late March.
