Manitoba Government Seeking Feedback on New Critical Minerals Strategy

TORONTO—The Manitoba government is dedicated to working hand-in-hand with Manitobans, Indigenous nations and industry stakeholders to develop a new critical minerals strategy that will focus on creating good jobs for Manitobans and long-term economic growth in the province, Premier Wab Kinew and Economic Development, Investment, Trade and Natural Resources Minister Jamie Moses announced here yesterday evening.
“Every Manitoban should benefit from our province’s wealth of critical minerals,” said Kinew. “Working with community leaders, Indigenous nations and industry, we can protect our environment, and grow our low-carbon economy. Our new critical mineral strategy will set Manitoba on a positive path forward, for generations to come.”
“Our government is focused on ensuring Manitoba is a leader in responsible mining practices and that mineral development is done in partnership with First Nations and surrounding communities,” Moses said. “These projects need to be informed by communities and stakeholders every step of the way, which is why we’re asking Manitobans to help shape our plans for critical minerals going forward.”
Manitoba is home to 29 of the 31 minerals on Canada’s 2021 critical minerals list, including lithium, graphite, nickel, cobalt, copper and rare earth elements. Critical minerals are crucial for Manitoba’s growth as a low-carbon leader and are essential to developing clean technologies, energy storage systems, electric vehicles and other technologies that advance net-zero targets, noted the minister.
To ensure the responsible and sustainable management of precious resources, the minister noted the Manitoba government is committed to developing a new critical minerals strategy and invited Manitobans to provide input to help guide the important work. In addition to public feedback, the Manitoba government will be initiating broader engagement with Indigenous governments, industry stakeholders and experts to gain insights and share priorities that will help inform and shape the strategic pillars of the new strategy, the minister noted.
