Statement from Premier Wab Kinew on Northwest Manitoba Wildfires

Our team travelled to Flin Flon, Bakers Narrows and The Pas today to support first responders and community members who have been affected by the devastating wildfires in northwestern Manitoba.

I want to thank the team with the Office of the Fire Commissioner, firefighters from the Manitoba Wildfire Service, The Pas, Flin Flon, Thompson, from across the province and those who have come from other parts of the country, who are working around the clock to protect people and homes as conditions rapidly evolve on the ground. I would also like to thank the emergency management officials, law enforcement, paramedics, Manitoba Hydro workers, municipal leaders, the Manitoba Métis Federation, First Nations leaders and volunteers who have also stepped up to support people who have been evacuated.

This is a very difficult time for people who have been asked to leave behind their home, their belongings and their community without the certainty of what will remain when they return. I want to reaffirm my commitment to you, that our government will be there for you. We will make sure that firefighters and first responders have the resources they need to fight the fire and protect your communities. And we will be there with funds and supports today and in the weeks to come for families who have been impacted.

As your premier, I am humbly asking those in affected areas to stay alert, to follow evacuation orders and to keep looking out for one another.

We will get through this the way we always get through difficult things in Manitoba – by working together as one people.
