Manitoba Government Announces New EMS Station Opens in Teulon
A new emergency medical services (EMS) station has opened in Teulon, providing a modernized operational hub for paramedics positioned in the Interlake town and surrounding communities, Health, Seniors and Long-Term Care Minister Uzoma Asagwara announced today.
“The ability to retain and recruit paramedics is crucial toward ensuring Manitobans have timely access to emergency care, particularly in rural and northern regions of our province,” said Asagwara. “The new EMS station in Teulon provides a modernized space for paramedics and reflects our government’s commitment to improving both staff culture in the health-care system and better emergency care for all Manitobans.”
The Manitoba government invested $532,000 in the renovated two-storey, 3,046-sq.-ft. station, which was formerly the home of the Teulon Rockwood Fire Department. Eight paramedics work out of the new Teulon station, providing 24-7 coverage for the town and broader Interlake region.
Located on a town site, the new station includes two garage bays and a new crew quarters for paramedics.
“Paramedics are on the front lines of health care, facing complex and demanding situations every day as they respond to medical emergencies,” said Louise Alarie, regional EMS director for Shared Health. “The new station in Teulon will provide paramedics with an appropriate and modernized home base when they aren’t out delivering and connecting Manitobans with the care they need.”
The new station is one of many investments made towards improving emergency medical services for both paramedics and the patients they serve. As part of Budget 2024, the Manitoba government pledged more than $16 million to expand job opportunities for paramedics, including training for students and current staff to become advanced care paramedics.
“Quality emergency care close to home is key to the economic and social fabric of our community,” said Mayor Todd Campbell, Town of Teulon. “This investment will help to strengthen emergency care for families and seniors in Teulon.”
This week is recognized in Manitoba as being Allied Healthcare Professionals Recognition Week, which celebrates the diverse and highly specialized skills of the province’s allied health professionals – which includes paramedics. The Manitoba government has additionally proclaimed May 19 to 25 as Paramedic Week in Manitoba for the important role they play in providing emergency health services.
