Manitoba Government Celebrates Opening of Dauphin Track for Summer Games

The 2024 Manitoba Summer Games is being hosted in Dauphin from Aug. 11 to 17, with six lanes featuring new rubber ready for athletes from across the province at the revamped track at Dauphin Regional Comprehensive Secondary School, Municipal and Northern Relations Minister Ian Bushie announced today.

“The Manitoba government is proud to support this new track in time for the summer games in Dauphin,” said Bushie. “Our government is working with municipal and community partners to build thriving and sustainable communities across the province. We want to make sure families in Dauphin and across the province have access to facilities that get them involved in sports and recreation, and bring communities together.”

The Manitoba government provided the Dauphin Manitoba Summer Games Committee Inc. with $375,000 for the Dauphin Running Track Project. This project replaced aging infrastructure, featured electrical upgrades and added modern rubberized track and a versatile 6,000 sq.-ft. multi-sports pad. The athletic facility caters to different regional activities and the benefits will far outlast the run of the games this summer, Bushie said.

“With the Manitoba Summer Games underway, young people from across the province will be challenging themselves and each other in the spirit of athletic competition,” said Sport, Culture and Heritage and Tourism Minister Glen Simard. “Supporting the Dauphin Regional Comprehensive Secondary School with funding to upgrade their track and field infrastructure will help ensure the summer games are a success, but also allow students to train on a world class running track for many years to come.”

Simard helped kick off the Manitoba Summer Games at Sunday’s opening ceremony, which like all games events, is free to attend.

“We are thrilled to welcome athletes, coaches, and visitors from across Manitoba to the 2024 Summer Games here in Dauphin,” said Mayor David Bosiak, City of Dauphin. “The revitalization of the track at Dauphin Regional Comprehensive Secondary School is a testament to what we can achieve when we work together. This project not only enhances our facilities, but also strengthens our community by providing a space where athletes of all ages can pursue their passions for years to come. We are grateful to the Manitoba government and all of our partners for their generous support, and we look forward to an exciting and inspiring week of competition.”

The games hosts a variety of events throughout the week, with attendees encouraged to stay, camp, and enjoy their stay in the heart of Manitoba’s spectacularly scenic Parkland region, added Bushie.
