THOMPSON—The Manitoba government is investing in the Thompson Community Pool, a new facility that will serve the people of Thompson and the surrounding northern region, Premier Wab Kinew and Municipal and Northern Relations Minister Ian Bushie announced here today.

“Manitoba families want their kids to have somewhere they can go to have some fun and get some exercise, and this pool is going to provide recreation opportunities for everyone in Thompson and this region of the north,” said Kinew. “Our government knows how important these community places are for families in the north, and we’re taking action to make sure facilities like the Thompson pool get built.”

The Manitoba government is investing $5 million towards the project. This builds on the government’s previous investment in the project, bringing the total to $10 million.

“Our government is making sure that Thompson and other northern communities have a partner that will be with you every step of the way to get important projects like the Thompson pool built,” said Bushie. “This investment represents more than just a pool; it represents a commitment to the health, well-being, and quality of life for people in Thompson and the surrounding area.”

The new aquatic facility consists of two tank pools, including one six-lane pool and one pool with a shallow end with beach entry and a splash pad. The facility will also include a sauna and a space for small gatherings and meetings. It is designed not only to meet the current demands for aquatic recreation and swimming instruction but also to accommodate future growth in the region.

“The City of Thompson is excited to have the support of the federal government and the province to build the new aquatic centre,” said Mayor Colleen Smook, City of Thompson. “It will give 55,000 people in Thompson and the north a modern, accessible facility for low-cost recreation where they can have fun, get some exercise and make great memories all year long.”

The governments of Canada, Manitoba and the City of Thompson have worked co-operatively on the new aquatic facility. This new facility will replace the Norplex Pool, which closed in 2019 and will provide the people who live and work across northern Manitoba with a fun and safe way to stay active in the winter, added the minister.
