First Session Ends With Strong Legislation to Help Manitobans
Significant legislation to help Manitobans will become law after receiving royal assent at the end of the first session of the 43rd legislature.
“Our government has delivered a strong legislative agenda for Manitobans in our first session,” said House Leader Nahanni Fontaine. “These laws were designed to help everyday people in our province live a good life - with quality, reliable health care, a good job that pays the bills and provides dignity and self-respect, and a community where they can feel safe. Tonight, our government is moving forward on the commitments we made to Manitobans.”
Landmark legislation will pass to protect workers on strike, cut the gas tax, give a voice to seniors and their families, make elections fairer, keep Hydro bills affordable and keep communities safe.
Several bills introduced during the fall sitting will pass.
Bill 39, the Long-Bladed Weapon Control Act, will keep people safe by regulating the sale of long-bladed weapons, including machetes, knives and swords.
Bill 38, the Child and Family Services Act (Indigenous Jurisdiction), acknowledges the impact of the child welfare system on Indigenous families and affirms Indigenous rights to deliver kinship care.
The government will also pass its budget implementation bill, bringing into force initiatives to rebuild health care, lower costs for families and grow Manitoba’s economy.
