Manitoba Government Re-Establishes Advisory Council on Workplace Safety and Health
– – –Advisory Council Strengthens Protections for Manitoba Workers: Marcelino
As part of its ongoing commitment to strengthening protections for workers in Manitoba, the Manitoba government has appointed 13 members to the re-established Advisory Council on Workplace Safety and Health, Labour and Immigration Minister Malaya Marcelino announced today.
“Every worker in Manitoba deserves to come home safe at the end of the workday.” said Marcelino. “Re-establishing the Advisory Council on Workplace Safety and Health is a priority for our government and an important step in strengthening worker protections for Manitobans.”
The Manitoba government recently passed legislation to amend the Workplace Safety and Health Act to re-establish the Advisory Council on Workplace Safety and Health, which will advise and make recommendations on legislative and regulatory changes. The advisory council was cut by the previous government in 2018, noted the minister, adding that the 13 members appointed to the council include representation from workers, employers, technical and professional bodies.
The minister has appointed Johanna Willows, a labour, employment and human rights lawyer, and instructor in the labour studies program at the University of Manitoba, as chair for the Advisory Council on Workplace Safety and Health.
Duties of the council include advising the minister on occupational safety and health issues and the legislative review of the Workplace Safety and Health Act. The council reviews the Workplace Safety and Health Act every five years and reports its findings and recommendations to the minister.
