Families in Westwood Will Soon Have a New Place to Have Fun: Schmidt

The Manitoba government is investing $100,000 in support of the construction of a safe, inclusive and vibrant outdoor space for children and families Winnipeg’s Westwood neighbourhood, Education and Early Childhood Learning Minister Tracy Schmidt announced today.

“We are thrilled to be able to offer students a new, safe and exciting outdoor play area,” said Schmidt. “This play space will not only be a place for activity, but also a hub for fostering community spirit. We are deeply grateful to Logan Oxenham, MLA for Kirkfield Park, for his unwavering support and dedication in bringing this project to life.”

The new outdoor space will be designed with safety and inclusivity in mind and will be a welcome addition to Sansome School’s already vibrant learning environment, noted the minister.

“The Sansome School Parent Council would like to thank the Manitoba government for its overwhelming support of our Play Space Renewal Project. This space is a gathering place and a community hub for all of Kirkfield Park, servicing multiple daycare centres and a community club in addition to the students of Sansome School,” said Kailey Mymryk, president, Sansome School Parent Council. “Providing youth with a safe, accessible and developmentally rich outdoor space is a fundamental necessity for our community and we are thankful to have community leaders who understand this.  Without the support of the provincial government, this project could not be fully realized."

The minister noted the funding will help build a modern play area that encourages physical activity, creativity and social connection among the children.

It is anticipated the project will be tendered shortly, with work expected to begin this fall, added Schmidt.
