Manitoba Government Opens New 26-Bed Transitional Care Unit at Holy Family Home
A new 26-bed transitional care unit at Holy Family Home in Winnipeg’s North End neighbourhood is now open, Health, Seniors and Long-Term Care Minister Uzoma Asagwara announced today.
“This new unit will provide high-quality, appropriate level of care to seniors who have left the hospital and are awaiting admission into a personal care home,” said Asagwara. “In August 2024, our government committed to adding 68 transitional care beds to facilities across the province to help reduce wait times in emergency departments and ease access block within hospitals, and we are thrilled to be able to partner with Holy Family to surpass this commitment. Instead of cutting beds like the previous government, we are building capacity across the system.”
The Manitoba government invested $1.9 million in capital funding to renovate an outdated ward at Holy Family Home to create a safe, welcoming unit that supports improved care, noted the minister.
“Holy Family Home is proud to be able to extend the expertise we have built in both generalized and specialized personal care home services to this new interim care unit, and be a part of improving timely access to care and services for those waiting for long-term care,” said Angela Peeler, chief executive officer, Holy Family Home.
Key enhancements and upgrades included:
- Renovated washrooms with new flooring and modern fixtures to enhance safety and accessibility.
- Installation of a new resident shower and tub room, designed to improve privacy and accessibility.
- Upgraded wall protection including new guardrails for resident safety.
- Construction of a new nursing station to support staff workflow and efficiency.
- Installation of new security cameras, access control and nurse call systems for enhanced safety and oversight.
- New beds and resident furniture, designed for comfort and functionality.
- Renovations to the resident lounge and kitchen, offering communal and recreational spaces.
- New sprinkler systems improving fire safety and code compliance.
Since May 2024, the Manitoba government has opened 82 transitional care unit beds.
