Manitoba Government Supports Expansion of Guru Nanak Darbar Gurdwara

The Manitoba government is providing a capital grant of $250,000 to support Guru Nanak Darbar Inc. in the expansion of its gurdwara facility in Winnipeg, Premier Wab Kinew and Sport, Culture, Heritage and Tourism Minister Nellie Kennedy announced today.

“Our government is proud to support organizations that strengthen the social and cultural fabric of Manitoba,” said Kinew. “Guru Nanak Darbar Inc. plays an essential role in fostering community connection and belonging for all who gather there.”

The funding will assist with costs associated with a major expansion project that will increase the gurdwara’s footprint to 18,000 square feet from 10,000. The project includes the construction of two multipurpose rooms, enhanced cultural and community spaces, accessibility improvements and a full heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system upgrade.

“The expansion will create a vital gathering place for cultural programming and community services while preserving the integrity of the existing building,” said Kennedy. “This project represents exactly the kind of community‑driven initiative our government is committed to supporting. By expanding its facility, Guru Nanak Darbar Inc. is creating new opportunities for cultural engagement, education and community well‑being.”

“We are deeply grateful for this generous support from the Manitoba government,” said Sukhjinder Singh Dhillon, president, Guru Nanak Darbar Inc. “This expansion will allow us to better serve our congregation and the broader community by providing more space for cultural programs, community services and spiritual gatherings. This investment helps us honour our traditions while building for the future, and we are excited to bring this meaningful project to completion.”

This investment reflects the Manitoba government’s commitment to strengthening community infrastructure and supporting organizations that foster vibrant, inclusive and healthy communities, the minister noted.
