Manitoba Government on Track for Lowest Deficit-to-GDP Ratio in Canada
– – –Prudent Fiscal Management Keeps Manitoba on Path to Balance: Sala
The Manitoba government continues to demonstrate sound fiscal management and is now projected to have the lowest deficit-to-nominal gross domestic product (GDP) ratio among provinces, Finance Minister Adrien Sala announced today.
“Our government made a commitment to manage public finances responsibly while making responsible investments in what matters most to Manitobans: better health care, lower costs and good jobs,” said Sala. “Having the lowest projected deficit-to-GDP ratio reflects the disciplined approach we’ve taken and the progress we’re making toward charting Manitoba’s path back to balance.”
Since taking office, the Manitoba government has focused on restoring stability to the province’s finances through prudent spending management, targeted investments and steady deficit reduction. The minister noted Manitoba’s fiscal outlook has improved despite ongoing economic uncertainty and pressures across the country.
Sala recently travelled to Toronto, Montreal, New York and Washington to share Manitoba’s fiscal and economic outlook with investors and credit rating agencies.
“Global investors thinking about Manitoba long term were encouraged by the economic opportunities in our province, particularly at the Port of Churchill and in the critical minerals sector,” said Sala. “Credit rating agencies, including S&P, Moody’s and DBRS Morningstar, noted that Manitoba is taking a different approach to fiscal management than other provinces, with a sustained commitment to achieving budgetary balance in the near term.”
Manitoba’s position was confirmed last week following the release of Newfoundland and Labrador’s budget, the final provincial budget to be announced, the minister noted.
