Manitoba Government Invests $165,550 Toward Stony Mountain Community Centre Roof Restoration

The Manitoba government is providing $165,550 through the Manitoba Growth, Renewal and Opportunities for Municipalities (Manitoba GRO) program to the Rural Municipality (RM) of Rockwood to support the Stony Mountain Community Centre roof restoration project, Municipal and Northern Relations Minister Glen Simard announced today.
“This funding will help keep a well-used community facility in good repair for years to come,” said Simard. “Projects like this one protect the investments municipalities have already made in their recreation infrastructure, while also cutting energy costs and improving climate resiliency.”
The roughly 35,000-sq.-ft. roof, which covers the centre’s indoor ice rink and community event space at 117 School Rd., has been leaking as its joints age, reducing the insulation’s effectiveness and putting long-term use of the building at risk. The project will apply closed-cell polyurethane spray foam insulation and coat the metal roof with an aluminized polyurea membrane, with a smaller tar-and-gravel section repaired and coated using the same membrane.

The RM of Rockwood will cost-share the project through its recreation reserve fund. The municipality expects to award the contract this summer with capital works targeted for completion by October and final reporting by the end of the year.
The centre serves Stony Mountain and surrounding communities including Grosse Isle, Balmoral, Gunton, Argyle and Komarno, as well as residents of Stonewall, Winnipeg, and the RMs of St. Andrews and West St. Paul. The facility hosts minor hockey, skating and other sport programming, community and seniors’ events, public health services such as flu and vaccine clinics, and municipal, provincial and federal elections. It also serves as a reception centre under Rockwood’s emergency response plan, making it a critical asset under the municipality’s asset management plan.
Manitoba GRO provides cost-shared grant funding to municipalities outside Winnipeg for infrastructure that supports public safety, transportation, recreation and waste management.
