Manitoba Government Provides $80,000 for Multi-Field Soccer Pitch in Northern Winnipeg

The Manitoba government is providing $80,000 through the From the Ground Up – Safe Healthy Communities for ALL program to support the development of an innovative new soccer pitch at the Burton Cummings Community Centre in Winnipeg, Municipal and Northern Relations Minister Glen Simard announced today.
“Creating more spaces for Manitobans to get out, get active and connect with their community is exactly why we started the From the Ground Up program,” said Simard. “Our government is proud to support initiatives like this one as we work to make communities across Manitoba healthy, active and connected.”
The JumpStart Community Pitch is part of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Legacy Program, under which Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities has committed to build 25 inclusive, community-driven soccer pitches and support the development of new recreational facilities across Canada. Funding for the pitch will come from Jumpstart, the governments of Canada and Manitoba, and community funds.
“The World Cup inspired children and youth across Manitoba to get active and get involved in soccer within their communities,” said Labour and Immigration Minister Malaya Marcelino. “This soccer pitch will be a cornerstone of the Notre Dame community, where families, friends and neighbours can connect in a healthy and active way.”
Construction of the field will begin early next week, Simard noted, adding the field will include six different goals, player benches and a fenced enclosure.
“This new pitch will give more people the opportunity to play soccer right here in their own neighbourhood,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham, City of Winnipeg. “It’s another example of partners coming together to make investments that strengthen our communities and help build our city.”
The From the Ground Up – Safe Healthy Communities for ALL program provides up to $100,000 to help non‑profits, municipalities and northern affairs councils fund community revitalization, youth programs and capital improvements that strengthen local infrastructure and support vibrant community life.
