Manitoba Government Invests $286,000 for Recreation and Active Living Projects in Seven Northern Affairs Communities
The Manitoba government is investing more than $286,000 through the From the Ground Up – Safe Healthy Communities for ALL Program toward infrastructure projects that will encourage active living and recreation in seven northern communities, Municipal and Northern Relations Minister Glen Simard announced today.
“Investing in safe, accessible recreation spaces is essential to strengthening northern communities,” said Simard. “We’re supporting northern affairs communities as they upgrade arenas, halls, playgrounds and outdoor courts so families have places to gather, play and stay active. These projects reflect local priorities and will support healthier, more vibrant communities for years to come.”
The investments will support approved projects that make the facilities safer and more accessible, the minister added.
“This funding means a lot to us. Creating outdoor basketball courts gives families and youth a safe, welcoming space,” said Myra Ducharme, deputy mayor, Cormorant Community Council. “It’s a project with a big impact, helping us promote healthy living and strengthen our sense of community.”
Projects approved for funding include:
- Princess Harbour Community – $28,054 to construct a community-use dock including accessible trail, site preparation and installation;
- Rock Ridge Community Council – $6,515 to upgrade a park, including playground equipment, picnic tables, a volleyball net and a sandbox;
- Bissett Community Council – $52,800 to upgrade a boat launch and boardwalk including a concrete pad, decking replacement and railings;
- Cormorant Community Council – $76,256 for outdoor basketball court development including upgrades to the courts, seating, lighting and landscaping;
- Waterhen Community Council – $54,510 to upgrade a community centre including a heating system, tables and chairs;
- Crane River Community Council – $39,788 to upgrade a community arena including structural reinforcements, concrete forms, siding, girt boards and skirting boards; and
- Harwill Community Council – $28,723 to renovate a community hall including accessible washrooms, upgraded plumbing and flooring.
The From the Ground Up – Safe Healthy Communities for ALL Program provides up to $100,000 to help non‑profits, municipalities and northern affairs councils fund community revitalization, youth programs and capital improvements that strengthen local infrastructure and support vibrant community life.
