Manitoba Government Invests $1 Million in Municipality of Killarney-Turtle Mountain

The Manitoba government is investing $1 million through the 2025 Manitoba Growth, Renewal and Opportunities for Municipalities (Manitoba GRO) program toward critical municipal infrastructure upgrades in the Municipality of Killarney-Turtle Mountain, including full reconstruction of the Hungry Hills Bridge and a comprehensive three‑year rehabilitation of all municipal culverts and bridges, Municipal and Northern Relations Minister Glen Simard announced today.
“This investment strengthens a vital piece of rural infrastructure that residents, producers and local businesses rely on every day,” said Simard. “By reconstructing the Hungry Hills Bridge and upgrading culverts and crossings throughout the municipality, we are helping ensure safer travel routes, stronger climate resilience and long‑term sustainability for the entire region. These improvements reflect our government’s commitment to supporting rural communities with infrastructure built to modern standards and designed to withstand increasingly severe weather events.”
The Municipality of Killarney-Turtle Mountain is undertaking a multi‑year initiative to modernize aging infrastructure using contemporary engineering standards, proactive asset management and long‑term planning. The projects will improve transportation reliability, reduce lifecycle maintenance costs and support economic activity across the region, the minister noted.
The rehabilitation plan includes targeted engineering assessments, phased upgrades and the integration of resilient design standards to reduce flood risk, extend asset lifespan and improve transportation safety. Enhanced culvert capacity, erosion control measures and modern bridge design will help the municipality adapt to changing climate conditions and protect key agricultural and commercial routes.
“We are proud to announce that we have already begun work on the rehabilitation and planning of the reconstruction of the Hungry Hills Bridge,” said Janice Smith, mayor, Municipality of Killarney-Turtle Mountain. “Bridges are a crucial part of the rural landscape and our transportation network. Without the help of our partners, like the Manitoba government, municipalities are finding it hard to maintain and replace them up to the standards of the day. We are very fortunate to be awarded these funds and able to continue work on our infrastructure plan.”
While the Municipality of Killarney-Turtle Mountain is leading the project, the minister noted that the improvements serve a broader regional purpose. The Hungry Hills Bridge is a key connector for rural traffic and supports access to markets, services and transportation networks used by residents across neighbouring communities. The municipality also maintains collaborative relationships with surrounding municipalities and regional planning bodies to ensure co-ordinated infrastructure planning.
The Manitoba government remains committed to supporting rural growth, climate adaptation and long‑term community sustainability through strategic investments in municipal infrastructure, the minister added.
