Construction Underway at the New Portage Regional Health Centre

Access to Services Expanding in Fastest Growing Health Region, Providing Care Close to Home: Gordon

Construction is well underway for the new Portage Regional Health Centre in Southern Health–Santé Sud. The new facility will offer more inpatient beds, expanded medicine and surgical capacity, and an improved emergency department to serve Portage la Prairie and surrounding communities, Health Minister Audrey Gordon announced today.

“Our government is healing the health-care system by expanding access to health services and providing rural communities with the care they need closer to home,” said Gordon. “The new 269,000-sq.-ft. hospital will strengthen clinical services for residents of Portage la Prairie and surrounding communities and supports the delivery of high-quality care in a rapidly growing area of our province.”

The new $455-million, two-storey hospital will replace an existing 88-bed facility and will include:

  • 114 acute care inpatient beds;
  • increased day surgery capacity to allow more procedures locally;
  • an expanded emergency department designed to best practice standards including emergency treatment and assessment rooms, a trauma room, a stretcher bay, and an ambulance bay;
  • ambulatory care (new dialysis stations, chemotherapy, child and adult rehabilitation, mental health offices and interview rooms);
  • enhanced spaces for programs such as diagnostics, palliative care, and outpatient services including lab and rehabilitation; and
  • a new Indigenous health services cultural space with a design informed by Indigenous partners.

“Patients in the area will no longer have to travel to receive an expanded set of services, leading to faster care and improved quality of life. It will enable the region to continue to provide high-quality services closer to home,” said Jane Curtis, CEO, Southern Health-Santé Sud. “The new facility is a result of the commitment and collaborative spirit of the community and our partners including the Manitoba government and the Portage District General Hospital Foundation.”

The new facility is due to be completed in the fall of 2025, the minister noted.

The Manitoba government is providing a total multi-year capital investment of $1.3 billion to support building, expanding and renovating health-care facilities across the province. This includes Manitoba’s Clinical and Preventive Services Plan, led by clinicians, to establish a geographic network of care that improves access for Manitobans.

The plan includes the following:

  • construction of a new hospital in Neepawa;
  • renovations at Dauphin Regional Health Centre; and
  • expansions at Selkirk Regional Health Centre, Boundary Trails Health Centre in Morden-Winkler, Bethesda Regional Health Centre in Steinbach, and Lakeshore General Hospital in Ashern.
